Why We Recommend Organimi as the best Organization Chart Software: The key reasons we recommend Organimi is that it’s the easiest to use and the most affordable. Although Luicd. Chart is a little cheaper, it’s not specifically made to create org charts (it’s technically called “Flow Chart” software), so it takes a bit more manual work and you don’t get as good of tools for visualizing data. Organimi, on the other hand, is made for specifically for org charts, so the interface is much easier. You can upload your employee roster from a spreadsheet, then drag and drop to build your chart. It also gives you tons of options to share your chart, such as a public link to share it online, HTML code to post it on your website, or just the ability to save it as a PDF. ![]() One key downside is that (like Org. Plus) you have to buy an annual subscription. You can’t pay month- to- month. When to Use Insperity Org. For fast, easy-to-use piping and instrumentation diagram software, SmartDraw is the smart choice. Start with the exact piping template or industrial diagram you need. Plus: A Formal Optional. We also looked at Org. Plus Real. Time, the web- based org chart program from Insperity. Org. Plus has two key advantages over Organimi: The appearance is more professional – you can choose between 8 different themes when you export a chart. The Org. Chart is automatically generated when you import a spreadsheet – you don’t have to spend time building the chart or adding employees to it. On the flip side, this means you need a spreadsheet that lists all of your employees, their roles and their direct supervisors. If you don’t have this already, you need to create one. A key disadvantage is that Organimi doesn’t let you enter employees manually – you can only do it by uploading a spreadsheet. Likewise, if you ever need to edit your chart (add a new employee, for example, or change an employee’s title) you have to download the “master” spreadsheet, open it in a spreadsheet editing program, make the change, then upload it back into Org. ![]() Plus. When to Use Lucid. Chart: A Drawing Program.
Luicd. Chart is a software that creates many different types of flowcharts, such as mind maps, circuit diagrams, family trees, floor plans, org charts and more. This makes it fundamentally different than the other programs, which are designed specifically for org charts. On the plus side, you get more flexibility: You can draw different shapes for different roles, for example, or create multiple connections for an employee (you’re not limited to just one supervisor for each employee). On the other hand, it takes more manual work, since you have to create each box and arrow on the chart. The interface is also a lot more complicated since there’s far more options for creating objects and formatting the chart. If you use Zenefits HR management software you can actually generate an organization chart for free. From Dashboard > Employees you can view your list of employees as an Org Chart. The tool is pretty basic – you can’t export the chart as a PDF, for example, or generate a link to share it online. For those who already use Zenefits, however, it’s a free and convenient way to create a professional org chart. Click Here to try out a demo of Zenefits’ HR software. How It Works. Organimi is designed specifically for creating organization charts, so the tools are all fairly straightforward. You start by uploading (or manually entering) a list of employees. Then you build your chart by defining the different “roles” or positions held at your business and outlining their “levels” (i. Finally, you drag your employees over to their respective positions to fill up the boxes. Because the software is designed for org charts, there’s additional tools for sorting through your graph. You can collapse to view just the top 3 levels, or just the main departments. You can also create custom “views” which show different data fields, like employee phone number, email address, etc. Check out this video for an overview of Organimi: Org. Plus is probably the simplest of the 3 programs because there’s no manually drawing a chart. It’s all done for you: Just upload your “master” spreadsheet file and Org. Plus will build a chart. Each employee will be listed under their immediate supervisor. While some may find this easier, it presents a major downside in that you can’t edit the chart on- the- fly. You’ll need to download and re- up your spreadsheet every time you want to make changes. Also, while possible, it’s a little more difficult to account for complexities, like an employee having more than one supervisor. Like Organimi, Org. Plus gives you a lot of great tools for visualizing your chart. You can change the layout (how many chains of command you want to see, how many columns you want, etc.) You can also “expand” the chart every 2 levels or so by pressing arrows near the bottom of the screen. Lucid. Chart is more flexible than the other programs in that it’s not designed specifically for org charts. Whereas the other programs have clearly defined hierarchy levels, Lucid. Chart is more of a whiteboard where you can drag and drop boxes wherever you wish. This let’s you account for more complexities (like one employee having multiple supervisors), although on the other hand, it means you can get disorganized much more easily. Of all the programs, I found Lucid. Chart to have the most complex interface. Data Import / Export Options. Organimi: You can import a list of employees from a . CSV spreadsheet, or enter them manually. In addition to the usual employee data fields (position, email address, phone number, etc.) Organimi let’s you save up to 2 additional custom fields. To add employee photos to your org chart, you can upload images from your computer or grab photos from Google using Organimi’s search tool. Once created, you can export charts as a PDF or PNG image file. Organimi also let’s you generate a link to share the chart online, which you can post directly to Twitter, Facebook or Linked. In. As an additional option, you can generate HTML code to embed the chart on your website. Org. Plus: You can import employees from a XLS, XLSX, CSV, or TXT file. A key missing feature, however, is the ability to add employees manually from the Org. Plus interface (you can only do it by importing a spreadsheet). Likewise, I did not see any way to add custom fields. Employee photos can be added by uploading image files from your computer. You can export your organization chart as a PDF, Power. Point, Excel or HTML file. You cannot generate a link to share your chart online, however, as you can with Organimi. Lucid. Chart: You can import employees from a CSV spreadsheet file, or enter their information manually. Like Organimi, you can add many different custom fields to your chart. There’s also a unique image search tool to grab employee photos from Facebook, Dropbox or Flickr. To export your chart, you can save it as a PDF, PNG, Jpeg or Visio file. Like Organimi, you can also generate a link to share your chart online, send it via social media or generate HTML code to post it on your website. The Bottom Line. When it comes to org chart software, most businesses want something that’s simple, flexible, well- organized and easy to share. Organimi does a good job of fulfilling these needs: Being designed specifically for creating organizational charts, it’s very easy to use, yet offers you the flexibility to add employees or edit graphs on- the- fly. It also has convenient tools for sharing your graph, including the ability to publish it online or post it as an HTML object.
